Flowmapper - the future of public transport in Malmö

Malmö, one of Sweden's fastest-expanding cities, is home to over 350,000 inhabitants. Now the City of Malmö is facing an impressive transformation in its public transport system. With the help of Flowmapper Analytics, Skånetrafiken and the City of Malmö have taken a crucial step towards changing the city's public transport system.

Using Flowmapper's advanced analysis tools, which process position signals from the city's buses every second, an unprecedented overview of the traffic flow is created. Skånetrafiken and the City of Malmö can now easily identify where traffic is flowing smoothly and where measures are needed to improve both punctuality and accessibility.

Through Flowmapper, Skånetrafiken and the City of Malmö now have access to the same data points and analyses and together they can design a more attractive and efficient public transport system for the city.

The municipality is constantly working to improve public transport for the benefit of travelers and the environment, and Flowmapper has been a great help here.

- We are always interested in broadening the number of data sources we use when doing our analysis. Flowmapper allows us to look at new types of data that were not available before,” Oskar Kryh concludes.

The development of public transport in Malmö continues: recently, Malmö was the first in Europe to introduce a 24-meter long bus - which is completely electric. This is part of the “Storstadspaket Malmö” initiative to improve public transport in Malmö by 2027, including more electric express buses. By using Flowmapper as a basis, it is possible to follow up on the initiative, quantify it, and evaluate it.
