Public transport data
The data used in Flowmapper is free and open government data from buses. We created an AI and quality processes to make that data into tangible insights and visualizations.
Without data from the buses, it would not have been possible to develop Flowmapper, it is easy to understand. But without quality assurance, data modeling, and powerful visualization, data never becomes insights. When we developed Flowmapper, we solved this and more.
Governments often have policy directives to make public data available for innovation. A standard defined by Google, GTFS, has enabled public transport data to be made available. This data contains static information and is updated every two seconds with the positions of buses. This provides a unique opportunity to make real-time data available.
The data is collected and stored in a large database around the clock, all year round. We have chosen not to rely on third parties for collection to maintain control and ensure data quality assurance. We use a robust real-time service at Samtrafiken and the latest cloud technology.

Maximizing data management with modern big data technology
Thanks to modern big-data technology, data volumes are manageable. We separate storage from computing, making management easy. Every time we build quality-assured tables, we start from raw data, which means that any actions are implemented since the beginning of time. This is possible at a low cost thanks to smart partitioning, clustering and spatial indexes.
Extremely high standards of quality
We save the data as close as possible to the original machine-generated format and can create much logic that quality filters the data. We compare expected trips with actual outcomes to ensure correct connections. We have also developed methods to interpolate data and create a coherent data model.

We have world-class data quality. We calculate entries retrospectively and therefore don't have the same dependence on accurate human input. Together with our industry knowledge, we can extract insights instead of just data. This creates real insights that provide more than just data.

We use the best cloud platform for large-scale spatial processing to free ourselves from error-prone human input. We rely exclusively on high-quality machine-generated data for time and location regardless of volume. This provides a unique world-class data quality. We can use the data to create value for public transport passengers and the climate. This is a good example of when public data creates real value.
